Ingredients

  • 3 Tbsp. oil
  • 2 lb beef cubed
  • 3 cups stock or water
  • 3 onions peeled, sliced
  • 1 Tbsp. Worcestershire sauce optional
  • 1 tsp. sweet paprika
  • 1 tsp. garlic powder
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1/8 tsp. black pepper
  • 1 Tbsp. all-purpose flour
  • 1/3 cup heavy cream

Instructions

  • Heat oil on deep large frying pan.

  • Add cubed beef, cook on high for 5 minutes.

  • Add water or stock, Worcestershire sauce (omit for Polish recipe), sweet paprika, garlic powder, salt and black pepper. Cook for 1 hour covered, mixing sometimes.

  • Add onions, cook for approximately 1 hour or 1 and 30 minutes, covered on low-medium heat until meat will become soft and tender. Mix with spoon sometimes.

  • In a small jar combine cream with all purpose flour, shake it. Pour it slowly to beef, mixing all the time. Optional: add few tablespoons of water if the sauce will become to thick. Add more salt if desired.

Notes

  • How to make it Polish? Don’t add Worcestershire sauce since it is not common in Poland. So Worcestershire sauce is only optional in this recipe.
  • To make it most flavorful I recommend using stock.
  • The Polish gulasz needs to be cooked over low/medium heat for a long time. Slow cooking will make the most delicious dish.
  • Meal Prep Tips: store in airtight container in the fridge or freeze it.
What is best to serve with beef goulash? The best are mashed potatoes, rice, pasta, noodles, quinoa, barley etc. Serve it with a side of lettuce salad, beets or cucumber salad.
