Bloody Halloween cookies made with natural food coloring are perfect for a Spooky Party!
I have to admit…. I am watching to much “The Walking Dead”. What can I do? I love this TV show. I just finished fifth season yesterday and I am already sad. I know there is season 6 but not on Canadian Netflix yet. I have to say this is one of the best TV shows. Scary but very interesting. I watched season 1 through 4 last winter and I was impatiently waiting for season 5. It showed up in Netflix a week ago and I watched all episodes already. Come on Netflix… give me season 6!
These bloody Halloween cookies were inspired by this TV Show. Lots of blood… I had to make something bloody.
And most importantly they contain ONLY natural food coloring. I try to omit unnecessary food coloring as much as I can. I went to the Organic Store yesterday to get natural coloring and sprinkles but when I saw what was the cost I had to say, too expensive. So I came out with the clever healthy idea!
These bloody Halloween cookies are the BEST cookies ever. Soft, delicate and sweet. To break the sweetness of these cookies I used my magical natural food coloring and you can already guess what is it. It is…. raspberry! Very vibrant beautiful red color and your cookies look sooooo bloody.
Perfect for spooky party if you want to scare your guests:)

Bloody Halloween Cookies {Natural Food Coloring}
Ingredients
Cookies
- 1/4 cup confectioner's sugar
- 1/2 cup butter softened
- 1/2 tsp. vanilla extract
- 1 egg
- 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp. baking powder
Glaze
- 10 tsp. milk
- 2 cups icing sugar
Blood
- 1 cup raspberries
Extras
- flour to dust
- circle cookie cutter
Instructions
Cookies
- Preheat oven to 350 F. Prepare baking pan with parchment paper.
- In a large bowl mix butter and confectioner's sugar with electric mixer until it will become smooth.
- Add egg and vanilla extract. Beat until all ingredients will combine.
- In a separate bowl combine flour and baking powder. Add to wet ingredients.
- Mix with mixer, then knead the dough by hand.
- Flour the surface and roll the dough until 1/4 thick. Add flour when necessary. Cut the cookies with circle cookie cutter.
- Lay nicely on parchment paper. Bake for 6 - 10 minutes. Start checking after 6 minutes so they will not burn out.
- Cool off cookies completely before frosting.
Glaze
- Mix milk with icing sugar. Mash it with fork. Add more milk if it will become to thick or sugar if it will become to watery.
- Glaze cookies. I found two ways to do this:
- Take some glaze on a small spoon and glaze the cookies.
- Or put the glaze into the bag, make a little hole on the corner. Decorate cookies.
Blood
- Blend raspberries in a blender. Run through the strainer to remove seeds.
- Spatter the cookies

Love how you used raspberries for the blood! Reminds me of the insane brain cake I saw on BlogTO last week (google it if you haven’t seen it). Great meeting you today at the Peller tour and so nice to discover your blog 🙂
Ilona
I googled it.. wow what a cake! I liked visiting Peller Estates yesterday. It was a nice trip. Nice meeting you. You have a very lovely blog. I will be definitely visiting your blog often.

Glad that you actually just used natural coloring 😀
On that note, I just finished reading Kitchen Confidential by Anthony Bourdain. He mentions at some point that it isn’t all to uncommon to find blood spatters in restaurant food 😉

Great idea!! I will be making these the night before for a work party. What is the beat way to store these?
Ilona
On the counter top in the kitchen for couple hours is perfect, otherwise in the fridge. The best way is to consume them in up to 2 days. Cookies are ok, it is just the raspberry “blood” that might get spoiled quickly.
