Healthy beetroot smoothie with blueberries, strawberries, banana

This Beet Detox Smoothie is a simple, nutrient-packed drink made with just four ingredients. Perfect for a refreshing morning boost or a mid-afternoon snack, it features tender, cooked beets for a naturally sweet and smooth texture. Quick to make and full of vitamins and minerals. Don’t forget to try another delicious Mixed Triple Berry Smoothie.

Originally, I created this beet detox smoothie back in 2015, but I’ve decided to refresh the photos since it remains one of the most popular recipes on the blog. Beets have always been a big part of my diet, and that’s no surprise, I grew up enjoying plenty of beet soups and salads.

Did you know that beets are very low in calories, yet incredibly nutrient-dense? They are packed with essential vitamins and minerals, including Vitamin C, B6, folate, magnesium, potassium, iron, and manganese. Beets offer a range of health benefits: they can help lower blood pressure, reduce inflammation, improve digestion, support detoxification, and even assist with weight management.

So, how exactly do beets help detoxify your body? The magic happens in the liver, where phytonutrients called betalains work to neutralize and remove toxins from the body. Including beets in your diet can give your liver a natural boost, helping your body stay healthy and energized.

Beet Smoothie Recipe

Texture: smooth, creamy.
Taste: sweet with beetroot flavor.
Simplicity: quick to prepare, just blend all ingredients.
Meal Type: breakfast, drink, smoothie.

Ingredients Needed

Banana, blueberries, beet, strawberries.
  • Beet – you can use either cooked or raw beets. Raw beets will give a slightly earthier flavor, while cooked beets make the smoothie a bit sweeter and smoother.
  • Strawberries – fresh strawberries are ideal for this smoothie. If you prefer, you can substitute with raspberries for a slightly tangier taste.
  • Blueberries – fresh blueberries work best, but frozen ones can also be used if fresh aren’t available. They add natural sweetness and a beautiful color.
  • Banana – this is optional, but it adds natural sweetness and a creamy texture to the smoothie.
  • Water – used to help blend all the ingredients together smoothly. You can adjust the amount to reach your desired consistency.

How to make Beet Detox Smoothie

  1. (Video and full recipe below.) To make the beet easier to blend and give your smoothie a naturally sweeter flavor, cook it for 20–30 minutes until tender.
  2. Once cooked, add the beet to your blender along with the water, strawberries, blueberries, and banana. Blend until completely smooth and creamy. Pour into a glass, grab a straw, and enjoy this vibrant, nutrient-packed smoothie!

Tips to make Beetroot Smoothie

  • Cooking the beet is not necessary, but I’ve found that it makes the beet easier to blend and gives the smoothie a softer, creamier texture.
  • If you cook the beet, don’t drain the water — use it in the smoothie! It’s full of flavor and nutrients that you don’t want to lose.
  • If the smoothie turns out too thick, simply add a little more water to reach your desired consistency. This also helps make it easier to drink and enjoy.
  • I used my favorite Ninja Blender for this smoothie, and this Mega System Blender works great too. It blends fruits and vegetables smoothly. I use my blender daily for smoothies.
  • SUBSTITUTIONS: If you don’t have blueberries or strawberries on hand, raspberries are a great alternative and will add a slightly tangy flavor to the smoothie. The banana is optional, but it adds natural sweetness and a creamy texture. You can also try using a small handful of mango or pineapple for a tropical twist.

Beetroot Detox Smoothie FAQ’s

What fruit and veggie go well with beets?

Beets pair beautifully with a wide variety of fruits and vegetables, making them perfect for smoothies, salads, and juices. Popular options include berries (strawberries, blueberries, raspberries), banana, apple, pear, and citrus fruits like orange or lemon. On the vegetable side, carrots, kale, spinach, and other leafy greens complement the earthy flavor of beets, adding both nutrition and color. Don’t be afraid to experiment, beets are surprisingly versatile and work well with many flavors!

Can I freeze beets for smoothies?

Yes, you can freeze beets for smoothies. To do it properly, first slice the beets into pieces and arrange them in a single layer on a sheet of parchment paper or a plate. Freeze them this way initially so that the pieces don’t stick together. Once frozen, transfer the beet slices to a freezer-safe bag or container for long-term storage. This makes it easy to grab pre-portioned beets whenever you want to make a smoothie, and freezing won’t significantly affect their flavor or nutrients.

Do I need to peel beets for smoothies?

No, you don’t have to peel them. The skin actually contains additional nutrients and fiber, so leaving it on can boost the smoothie’s health benefits. However, for this beet detox smoothie, it’s perfectly fine to peel the beets if you prefer a smoother texture or want a milder earthy flavor. Either way, your smoothie will still be delicious and nutritious!

    1. I know… hate them or love them… most people see this way. I grew up eating them, maybe that’s why I like them. Thanks For visiting my blog!

  1. I’m a fan of reddish drinks! Most of the time they are really good, so this looks perfect! I need to try it! Thanks for the recipe. =)

  2. Beets are such a great source of iron and are a blood purifier. We eat them regularly in our next of the woods.

  3. I have done a variety of detox smoothies over the years, and I find it amazing all the different benefits of varying the fruits and vegetables in the drink. Beets have fantastic qualities!

  4. My mother just to give me a lot of beet juice mixed with carrot and orange juice, or blended with milk, since I was a child for breakfast and I loved it, bt let me tell you…mi mother and I never cook it or boiled unless it was for a “Red Salad” (Beets, red potatoes, cilantro and mayonnaise) bcs it has to be soft. If you cook it, you’ll take away all the good properties and vitamins for the juice. Now I make my own “Red juice” (Beets, red apple, blueberry, strawberries, banana and Chía seeds, honey & water)let it rest for 15 min and enjoy it, but only in the morning as a antioxidant and detox. And for lunch “The Green Juice”(Celery, spinach or kale, green apple, avocado, broccoli, banana, oatmeal or Chía seed honey & water) this one will give you all the fiber, energy and vitamins you need. You can take either one of this after a workout but must add egg whites, almond butter, banana @ oatmeal to recover the energy and give the protein to gain muscle…You’ll love it!!

    1. I’ve never done with canned beets, but I am pretty sure you can use them, unless they are salted, I wouldn’t use salted beets since I don’t want to drink salted smoothie, but if there are only beets in a can, yes I think they will work great.

  5. 4 stars
I tried to make this today, hoping I didn’t have to add anything like lemon juice or something. But I really enjoyed it. Thanks for the recipe! I’m definitely going to make more of it.

  6. 5 stars
I’ve never tried beets in a smoothie. Usually, I juice them or eat them pickled. This recipe was delicious. I added more blueberries and a tablespoon of honey. This will be one of my go to smoothie from now on. Thanks for sharing.
