Savory mashed sweet potatoes made with butter and topped with shredded parmesan cheese. This easy to make sweet mashed potatoes are great as a side dish for dinner.

Sweet potatoes don’t have to be always made with sweet toppings, they taste amazing with savory spices. This easy to make creamy sweet mashed potatoes are made only with few ingredients.

Sweet Potatoes, butter, salt, parmesan cheese.

How to make Mashed Sweet Potatoes

  1. (Full recipe and video below). Cut or slice thickly sweet potatoes and cook until soft, for about 20-25 minutes.
  2. Mash sweet potatoes, add butter and salt, top it with parmesan cheese.

Savory Sweet Mashed Potatoes Tips

  • You don’t have to dice sweet potato, just cut into few pieces or slice thickly before boiling in the water.
  • If potatoes are not salty enough, add more, it is based on your preferences, you can also add salted butter if you want.
  • SUBSTITUTIONS: If you don’t have parmesan cheese you can use different cheese, for example: parmigiano reggiano, gruyere cheese, cheddar cheese, mozzarella cheese or any other that you like or have at home. Any cheese will add extra flavor to potato.

Creamy Sweet Potatoes Mash Faq’s

Is it better to peel sweet potatoes before boiling?

You don’t have to actually peel potatoes if you don’t want to, however they will probably require few minutes longer to cook. Also, potato mash might be more creamy without a peel.

Why is my sweet potato mash watery?

Make sure you drain the water completely before mashing.

Can you boil sweet potatoes ahead of time?

Yes you can, they are great for meal prep, just store them in airtight (preferably) glass container for up to 4-5 days, reheat on the stove or in microwave.

How do you know when sweet potatoes are done boiling?

Simply check with fork if they are soft enough.

What to serve with Mashed Sweet Potatoes?

They can be served with any meat or fish and with extra salad on the side. Try it with Swedish Meatballs, Oven Baked Basa Fillets or make it vegetarian and serve it with Creamy Mushroom Sauce and No Mayo Easy Broccoli Salad.

Ingredients

  • 2 sweet potatoes
  • 1 Tbsp. unsalted butter
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 cup parmesan cheese shredded

Instructions

  • Peel sweet potatoes and slice thickly. Place into pot with water, sweet potatoes need to be immersed into water completely.
  • Cook on low-medium heat for approximately 20-25 minutes until soft.
  • Drain sweet potatoes, mash with potato masher.
  • Add butter and salt, mix in.
  • Top with shredded parmesan cheese.
